DIY Skin Brightening, Tightening, Toning Recipe

Spring Healthy Skin
1. In with the New
Exfoliate dead, dehydrated skin – which accumulates during the harsh months of winter. Nightly at-home treatments, such as cream-based Vitamin A and gel-based Alpa Hydroxy Acid (AHA) products. 10 – 15% AHA works best.

2. Spring Clean Skin Care
Not just our skin needs spring cleaning. Our beauty cabinets need to clean as well. The best way to simplify – is to limit routines to no more than three to four steps – morning and night. Mild gel cleaners, antioxidant-rich Vitamin C and sunscreen moisturizer. Before bed, try using resurfacing ingredients such as AHA, retinols and restorative peptides.

3. Sun Safe Skin
Indoors and outdoors require spf protection – from both UVA and UVB rays. Early aging is attributed sun exposure from windows of our cars, home or office. Cloudy, overcast days scatter UVB rays, but the aging agent UVA rays comes through. Full spectrum sunscreen capture those elusive A rays before they can wreak havoc.

4. Sunless Glow
Why not opt-in for self-tanners? This is an amazing option to avoid sun damage!

If you have freckles or hyperpigmentation, I recommend you only use the products from the neck down because sunless tanners will make them darker. Instead, use a mineral bronzer, BB cream, or CC cream on your face. Also, don’t go into the sun for several hours after putting on bronzing products because they contain chemicals that make skin more sensitive to sun exposure. Instead, apply these products later in the day and sleep in them – Celeste Hilling, Healthy Skin Care Expert & CEO of Skin Authority.

5. Oils for the Body
Legs, arms – lets face it, they demands a healthy glow. Make your skin shine, conceal flaws (veins, scars and cellulite), reflect light (which acts as a concealer). Multi-purpose oils work best as it’s chic enough for all over coverage (skin, hair)…like Argan oil.

6. Fuel the Skin
Your skin shows your eating habits. This enormous organ responds to how we nourish our bodies. Be sure to have omega 3’s, antioxidants and fatty acids in your daily diet. In addition, vitamins A, D, E and K are also essential.

7. Get Lots of Sleep
Those who sleep 7 to 8 hours per night, have skin that retain more moisture than those who sleep less than 7 hours per night!

Less sleep means less melatonin and antioxidants, both of which fight off free radicals that cause premature aging and disease. Replenish those lost antioxidants and moisture by applying essential oils to the skin. When you have trouble sleeping, the natural effects of essential oils promote de-stressing and relaxation. Also, try counting backwards from 100 – your brain is forced to put energy into focusing on the counting and before you know it, you’ll be dreaming.” – Celeste Hilling

Rehydrate Your Skin

Any activity that can cause dehydration, including alcohol consumption, caffeine consumption, extreme physical activity, or a very dry environment, can also cause dehydration of the skin,” David Kriegel, MD

• Use lukewarm water when washing your hands or showering, The Peninsula Spa advises. “Hot water (while it may feel good) aids in de-hydrating the skin.”
• Avoid using harsh anti-bacterial soaps and over-using alcohol-based hand sanitizer, which can both be very dehydrating, says the spa.
• “Be sure to moisturize with a cream or lotion immediately following a shower or washing your hands,” The Peninsula Spa continues.
• “We recommend a significant increase in water consumption (two glasses) both before and after the ‘dehydrating’ activity,” Dr. Kriegel suggests. “This single act should mitigate the dehydrating effects on the skin.”
• As well, “foods high in essentially fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6s also help keep skin hydrated,” the spa says.
• Use a dry brush to exfoliate your body before getting in the shower for better results, it shares. “Then, follow in the shower with an oil- and salt-based scrub for a double-packed exfoliation and hydration.”
